Under certain circumstances, you may need to perform a reset on your Baofeng UV-5R amateur radio. Performing a reset is extremely easy. A variety of issues can occur that affect your Baofeng’s operation, and many can be fixed with a simple reset or reboot of the device.
Perform the following steps in order-
To Reset the Baofeng UV-5R:
Total Time: 5 minutes

Turn on the radio and press the MENU button.

Press the UP and DOWN arrow key to select RESET (Menu Item 40).

Press MENU to choose RESET.

Press the DOWN arrow key to choose VFO.

Press MENU.
The radio will display: SOURCE?

Press MENU to confirm.
The Baofeng UV-5R is a two-way radio that operates on both the UHF and VHF frequencies. It has a maximum power output of eight watts and a range of up to six miles. The UV-5R is equipped with 128 channels, a backlit LCD display, a VOX function, and an emergency alert function. It also has a built-in FM radio. The UV-5R is powered by a rechargeable battery and comes with a charging cradle and AC adapter.
A VFO RESET only resets the frequency values in VFO mode. To reset the radio back to factory defaults, choose RESET/ALL
To perform a VFO Reset
1.Turn on the radio and press the MENU button.
2.Press the UP and DOWN arrow key to select RESET (Menu Item 40).
3.Press MENU to choose RESET.
4.Press the DOWN arrow key to choose VFO.
5.Press MENU. The radio will display SOURCE?
6.Press MENU to confirm. The radio will display WAIT… for a few seconds, then beep twice to confirm the reset is complete. The radio will revert to Chinese language mode. The reset is complete.
If your radio now speaks in Chinese
Press MENU.
2.Press the UP and DOWN arrow key to select VOICE (Menu Item 14).
3.Press MENU to choose VOICE.
4.Press the DOWN arrow key to choose ENG.
5.Press MENU to choose ENG.
